The Difference Between "Tolerance" and "Sensitization" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dan

There are two major components to addiction and chemical dependency. Many people often focus on the "tolerance" section of an addiction and don't know that the brain also changes and forms a thing called "sensitization". An addictions counselor is most often experienced in both of these prospects.

Tolerance.

The definition of this word is "The existence of opinions or behaviors that one does not necessarily agree with". When people go to seek alcoholism help they nearly always have a high tolerance level for what they are addicted to. This means that they want more and more of on particular substance or behavior to reach a certain level of satisfaction or a "high". As tolerance increases so does the intake.

Sensitization.

This is much different than Tolerance, but can go hand in hand with it. Sensitization, to a counseling graduate, is when the person needs less and less of a substance or chemical to crave it immensely. So even though the Tolerance levels of a substance go up the sensitization levels will decrease making the person want even just a tiny dab of what their addicted to, making it a very dangerous side of addiction.

Chemical dependency counseling focuses on these two aspects of a drug addiction when giving counseling help, but also spends time viewing the way the brain works with addiction physiology.
