Recently some "clinical reports" were released to the public about something they called "Facebook Depression." So many times a chemical dependency counselor will see people trying to make a huge link between social media and depression! This is far from the truth, especially when it deals with chemical dependency counseling! Lets examine it in detail…
Everyone is on Facebook, so it's easy to make a report almost about anything and then link it to the usage of Facebook. Many times social media will play less than 15% in a persons depression, according to addiction physiology. The average person gets depression from things like death, big change, and relationships being broken. Back when Myspace was a trend psychologists tried to blame that too for depression in teens, which could of been true in some cases, but as far as Facebook goes…no. Facebook was made to be a positive environment for everyone so that they will come back! They learned from other networking sites that you want to keep negativity at a low level, this is something taught in chemical dependency counseling too. That is one of the main reasons why Facebook makes it so easy to delete comments, hide posts, and why they still haven't added a "dislike button". So, as far as addiction physiology, chemical dependency counseling, and even equine therapy are concerned, depression does not sprout from Social Media very often. Every once in a while you will get a case of an addiction to social media that will require an addiction cure, but its rare to see depression come from it.
