Finding Your Place in The World, by D. Graves-Bommarito

Author Burt Nanus said, "Vision is where tomorrow begins, for it expresses what you and others who share the vision will be working hard to create. Since most people don't take the time to think systematically about the future, those who do, and who base their strategies and actions on their visions, have inordinate power to shape the future."

Where's your future? Where’s your place in the world? Have you sought it out? Are you living it?

Whether you're a home office, a mom-and-pop, or a Fortune500 corporation, we all have to find our own niche. Perhaps you prefer making your own decisions, working alone and not answering to anyone. Or maybe you prefer the predictability and comfort of a tried and true mom-and-pop company that's been running the same way for years. Or maybe you're out there working your way up the corporate ladder. As human beings we all have different needs and desires. But we are all the same in that we have the need to be fulfilled by what we do. What do you do? Do you get to do what you enjoy? Or are you simply struggling to pay the bills month after month? Perhaps it's time to turn your passion into a pastime and make some extra dough. Or maybe it's simply time to branch out and start a business of your own or set your sights on the next rung of the corporate ladder. Individual goals are very personal and there's not a tried and true formula for anybody. Sometimes it's just time to reassess where we've been in order to focus on the future and where we're going.

It is a necessary element in this life that we do what we love in order to get to love what we do. It is also necessary that we shake things up once in while in order to avoid growing stagnant. The mind and the soul thrive on change. Change keeps us alive and passionate about life. And what we do keeps us passionate about being alive. It's all about balance. If you find yourself dreading getting up in the morning and facing the "daily grind", maybe it's time for a change. Don't go in and quit your job today, take baby-steps. I repeat: DON'T QUIT YOUR JOB TODAY!! Find something that you enjoy and devote some time to it. Imagine it, cultivate it then reap the rewards.

Ask yourself what you enjoy doing and find the time to dedicate to it. If it turns into a job that will allow you to do what you love and love what you do, the rewards will be endless. Do you enjoy the challenge of creating things? Try your hand at graphics. The advent of the internet has opened up limitless possibilities for those with a talent for graphic design. Take a tutorial online and stretch your imagination to the possibilities of creation or website design.

Do you enjoy shopping? Look in the classifieds and find a job being a "personal shopper". Better yet, start your own business. Advertise in your local paper and shop for those that are too busy to do it themselves and/or those that are unable to do it for themselves. Are you good with numbers? Try your hand at accounting, mathematics, the stock market. Do you mentally rearrange the furniture of rooms that you walk into? Try taking a decorating class at your local community college.

Turn your strategies and subsequent actions into the vision that you hold for your future. Even if you don't turn your passion into a career change - at least you'll be doing something you enjoy with your free time. So, go out there and find your place in the world.
